(2018): Increasing evapotranspiration of extensive roof greenings by using plants with high transpiration rates and irrigation with grey water. Acta Horticulturae (1215), S.53-56. Green roofs might mitigate the urban-heat-islands (UHI) due to an increase of evapotranspiration. However, most green roofs are nowadays extensive ones which are designed as dry site without irrigation, with a thin layer of growing medium and drought-adapted vegetation, especially sedum. Under hot and dry conditions - when cooling is needed - evapotranspiration of such green roofs will decrease rapidly because of a shortage of water. To increase evapotranspiration and thus cooling capacity, supplementary irrigation and plants with high transpiration are needed. But the use of drinking water is not sustainable, due to limited resources. Grey water might be an alternative. In a previous work herbs and grasses tolerant to grey water and with high transpiration rates were selected. In the current study evapotranspiration of extensive roof greenings with three mixtures of these plants compared to common sedum greenings was examined. In a 14-month greenhouse experiment, grey water irrigation reduced evapotranspiration of mixtures of herbs and grasses as well as of sedum only up to 15% compared to tap water. Irrespective of water quality, evapotranspiration of herbs grasses mixtures was more than twice as high as evapotranspiration of sedum. Under field conditions an established herbs grasses roof reached an evapotranspiration of 7.5 L m-2 d-1. Based on the results of the greenhouse and field trials the FAO-56 evapotranspiration model was adapted to non-irrigated green roofs with sedum as well as to irrigated sedum and herbs grasses vegetation, respectively. These models show that under hot and dry conditions evapotranspiration of non-irrigated sedum roofs tend towards zero within a few days, whereas irrigated herbs grasses roofs maintain high evapotranspiration rates. At least under weather conditions in central Europe irrigated roof greenings with herbs and grasses can compensate nearly 100% of global radiation during summer. Thus, this new type of high transpiration green roof can reduce UHI sustainable.

Frosch, B.; Jäckle, H.; Mhamdi, A.; Achhal El Kadmiri, A.; Rudner, M.; Deil, U. (2016): Sacred sites in north-western Morocco - naturalness of their vegetation and conservation value for vulnerable plant species. . Feddes Repertorium 127, S.83-103.

The vegetation and flora of 86 sacred sites (surroundings of tombs of local saints, cemeteries) in NW Morocco was studied to assess their conservation value for undisturbed Mediterranean evergreen forests and vulnerable plants. Habitats were mapped, based on life form, maximum height and cover value, and classified according to naturalness. Vascular plants were classified according to pre-defined risk factors like stenochory or grazing sensitivity. Naturalness index and refugial value were calculated for each site. Only 20% of the mapped site area was closed forest. On many places, human impact had created a vegetation mosaic. Most of the vulnerable plants were mesophilous forest species or grazing sensitive taxa. Endemic species occurred only rarely. The occurrence of vulnerable plants and the naturalness of the vegetation were positively correlated. Sacred site extension had no significant effect on the number of vulnerable species. Results indicate a limited relevance of sacred sites in northern Morocco for the protection of intact forests and vulnerable plants. However, these localities can play an important role as stepping stones in agricultural landscapes. They protect plants, sensitive to opening of the tree layer, to deforestation and to intense grazing. Certain formerly widespread forest communities survived exclusively on sacred sites.

In many European countries, the condition of the majority of waters still does not meet advanced ecological standards. In this context, conservation of riparian habitats is of particular importance. A recently increasing demand for cultivable land led to changes in the EU's subsidy policies. We argue that these changes to land use policies can affect aquatic–terrestrial intersections. We used media reporting on beaver-related aspects as a parameter for conflict potentials within riparian habitats. We detected a considerable increase in conflicts occurring concurrently with the re-intensification of agricultural land use. Our results provide cause for concern that recent tendencies in land use in the EU might have destructive impacts on freshwater ecosystems.
