Improved process understanding contributes to better quantification and predictions of CO2 fluxes from treeless peatlands. By using process oriented modelling and observation data, this work explains several observed phenomena, identifies many open issues for further research and suggests several model improvements including proxies for site specific parameters. The presented results will be of interest for both, modellers and experimentalists in designing their model and measurement setup. more

I investigated the changes in greenhouse gas fluxes of a prealpine bog after restoration. Short- and long-term restoration was effective in GHG reduction and vegetation shift on former ditches. Long-term restoration on drier sites led to natural like vegetation and GHG balances. Rising water tables caused CH4 emissions, which were overcompensated by reduced CO2 releases and raised plant productivity. Peatlands are hotspots in terms of the global carbon cycle. Depending on land use they can be long-term carbon sinks or sources. In the present study the CO2 and CH4 exchange of an afforested and drained bog forest and a natural bog-pine ecosystem were investigated by eddy-covariance measurements.
