Although, sustainable consumption is gaining in relevance for consumers and retailers in Germany, pro-social consumption is still often neglected. Therefore, this study investigates factors influencing the purchase intention of German flower buyers in relation to Fairtrade-cut roses based on an online survey of 1,201 flower buyers in retail shops in 2017. As a basic theoretical framework, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was utilized and extended with two additional constructs. The addition of emotions and perceived consumer effectiveness reveals a strong explanatory power of the model proposed. Data analysis via partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) suggests that emotions and subjective norm are the two most influential determinants of intention to purchase Fairtrade roses. However, emotions also significantly influence all determinants of behavioral intention introduced to the extended model. The findings of this study can be used to fine-tune marketing and communication activities related to pro-social and Fairtrade products.

Socially responsible investment (SRI) is an investment strategy which complies with ethical, social, environmental or corporate governance criteria. Investments in renewable energies are commonly regarded as complying with SRI principles. This study aims to deepen the understanding of individuals' intentions to invest in wind energy. As an underlying framework the Theory of Planned Behavior's constructs attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control were used and statistically tested with an online-survey of 592 participants in 2014. Further, this theory was extended by adding the constructs consumption profile and investor profile to the framework. With the inclusion of the two additional constructs the theoretical model turns to be very suitable as it doubled the share of explained variance of behavioral intention from 25% to 50% compared to the Theory of Planned Behavior. The analysis further shows that subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, consumption profile and investor experience have statistically significant influence on investment intentions in wind energy. However, attitudes towards wind energy investments are not a significant predictor of investment intentions. We conclude that, apart from the scientific implications of our results, our findings have practical applications for the conceptual design of wind energy investments.

Forecasting future demand is of high importance for many companies as it affects operational decisions. This is especially relevant for products with a short shelf life due to the potential disposal of unsold items. Horticultural products are highly influenced by this, however with limited attention in forecasting research so far. Beyond that, many forecasting competitions show a competitive performance of classical forecasting methods. For the first time, we empirically compared the performance of nine state-of-the-art machine learning and three classical forecasting algorithms for horticultural sales predictions. We show that machine learning methods were superior in all our experiments, with the gradient boosted ensemble learner XGBoost being the top performer in 14 out of 15 comparisons. This advantage over classical forecasting approaches increased for datasets with multiple seasons. Further, we show that including additional external factors, such as weather and holiday information, as well as meta-features led to a boost in predictive performance. In addition, we investigated whether the algorithms can capture the sudden increase in demand of horticultural products during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020. The value chain of flowering potted plants (FPP) is associated with environmental, social and economic sus-
tainability challenges. Indicator-based assessment methods can provide insights into sustainability performance
of agricultural value chains. The FPP value chain is not comparable to other agricultural systems and therefore
cannot be assessed with existing indicator-based tools. In this study, a framework was developed for sustain-
ability assessment of the FPP value chain, from breeding to distribution. The development of the framework
involved defining sustainability themes and subthemes based on the characterization of the value chain and the
investigation of social, environmental and economic sustainability challenges. The generic sustainability
assessment tools, Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA) and Response-Inducing
Sustainability Evaluation (RISE), provided the foundation for indicator selection and development. The cur-
rent study emphasized the need for a system-specific view, especially in unique systems such as the FPP value
chain, because generic assessment tools, such as SAFA and RISE, do not cover all sustainability subthemes. Most
of the indicators missing from generic assessment tools were environmental indicators. Environmental assess-
ment is closely related to value chain stages and product-specific processes, therefore indicators were allocated
according to the value chain stages, breeding, production and distribution. Social sustainability themes are
influenced by national and regional socio-economic conditions, such as government provision of healthcare and a
social safety net. Therefore, indicators are allocated based on geographical regions and stakeholder groups. The
economic subthemes are determined by industry structure and sector-specific conditions. The ornamental sector
is characterized by low margins and high uncertainty, related to profitability and vulnerability. Despite the initial
evaluation performed in the current study, in the next step, industry actors need to determine the feasibility of
the indicators. The implementation of the framework developed in the current study will provide further insights
into the value chain, which will guide actors in taking actions for performance improvement and provide
guidance for policy-makers in setting sustainability targets.

Plant production in indoor farming systems offers significant advantages compared to open field orgreenhouse production systems. Especially in terms of quality and the ability for automation the system is superior to the conventional production systems. Concerning resource consumption indoor farming has considerable advantages in regard to water consumption and the use of pesticides.The main disadvantage is the high consumption of electrical energy. Taking advantage of the specific benefits or eliminating the disadvantages, for example by using renewable energies, different potentials and fields of application for indoorfarming arise.The paper outlines the potentials and future fields of application of indoor farming considering the specific differences to conventional production systems related to resource consumption, quality and automation.

Climate change and increasing global urbanization accelerate the expansion of protected cultivation systems. However, certain dependences to external weather conditions remain even in modern greenhouses. Indoor vertical farming, on the other hand, pursues complete inde-pendence from external weather conditions with the aim for highly accurate control of all crop parameters. Particularly with regard to the advancing climate change and the need for sustainable resource consumption, there are clear advantages due to the year-round and independent cultivation of plants and raw materials under optimal conditions. The complexity in the optimal networking of the plant-technology systems offers intensive development opportunities for dig-itization and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Indoor vertical farming offers great opportunities regarding a sustainable and consistent production of high-quality herbs and raw materials all year round for the perfume, chemical, or food industry. Cultivation takes place in an enclosed structure, operating predominantly independent from external conditions in multi-layer systems equipped with artificial lighting, enabling extremely high resource use efficiencies with a simultaneous increase in yield. On the other hand, field production in terms of plant quality and harvesting times is highly influenced by environmental conditions, making it difficult to maintain homogenous raw material qualities throughout the year. To show how different light qualities affect the overall efficiency and quality of Origanum majorana grown in an indoor farm, the resource consumption, yield, and cultivation time as well as the essential oil quantity was analyzed, and the efficiencies in terms of energy and land use efficiency calculated. The experimental setup clearly demonstrated that the yield regarding fresh as well as dry matter and oil content was comparable to one square meter of open field production. Based on this, the multi-layer system and the noticeable lowered growth period result in a significantly higher area efficiency compared to the open field, leading to a potential increase of annual yields of dried leave weight and oil contents by up to 21 times. It was also shown that a white spectrum (W) showed similar influence on plant growth and yield as a spectrum consisting of blue and red (B/R). Nevertheless, the LED treatment W did show higher light use efficiencies as well as a better working conditions inside the cultivation chamber. By an integration of indoor vertical farming into existing industrial processes, new and innovative opportunities for a flexible and low-risk supply chain seem feasible and according to German food industry meet the interests of existing stakeholders.

Der Bayerischen Landwirtschaft stehen eine Vielzahl von Informationen zur Verfügung, welche als Basis für fundierte Entscheidungen im landwirtschaftlichen Produktionsprozess dienen. Um diese Fülle an Information gebündelt und fachlich sinnvoll verknüpft für Landwirte und Berater verfügbar zu machen, wird eine digitale Wissensbasis, als Grundlage für eine bessere Ausnutzung von Effizienzsteigerungspotenzialen im Pflanzenbau, entwickelt. Die Modellierung der Daten-konzepte in OWL-Ontologien und die Datenhaltung in RDF-Graphdatenbanken bilden die Basis für ein unabhängiges Expertennetzwerk. Am Fallbeispiel Stickstoffdüngung im Winterweizen entstehen unter Einbeziehung von realen Betriebsdaten erste Bausteine dieser Wissensbasis.

The assessment of tomato fruit quality depends on a variety of extrinsic and intrinsic quality parameters such as color, firmness and sugar content. Conventional measurement methods of these quality parameters are time consuming, require various measurement devices, and in case of intrinsic quality, involve destructive measurements. Latest research focused on the non-destructive determination of these parameters by using spectroscopic measurements. The goal of this study was to evaluate the capability of three commercial-
ly available portable and miniaturized VIS/NIR spectrometers, so
called food-scanners, in predicting various tomato quality attributes in a non-destructive way. Additionally, this study evaluated the software provided by manufacturers for building of prediction models by comparing the results derived from those software tools to state-of-the-art software for multivariate analysis. Evaluation of food-scanner spectra resulted in prediction models of high accuracy (r² > 0.90) for tomato fruit firmness, dry matter, total soluble solids and color values L*, a* and h°. Prediction models computed with manufacturer’s software showed similar accuracy to those derived from state-of-the-art evaluation software. Results of this study illustrate the great potential of commercial food-scanners for non-destructive quality measurement. Further important features of food-scanners with respect to the application along the fresh produce supply chain are addressed.

The study investigated the value chain of flowering potted plants supplying the German market and the drivers influencing chain actors. The study builds on strategic and horticultural value chain literature. Data was collected by conducting 20 in-depth interviews with chain actors from different stages in the value chain and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results showed that the value chain of flowering potted plants is divided in two pathways due to distinct propagation methods, either generative (seeds) or vegetative (cuttings). Whereas propagation material is generally produced in southern countries, such as Africa and Central America, young plants and potted plants are cultivated within Europe. The paper identified driving forces such as retailer requirements, weather conditions, price pressure and innovations. Furthermore, the study provides an overview of chain activities and processes to help the sector anticipate developments, and support stakeholders in future decisions.

Lycopene, the red colored carotenoid in tomatoes, has various health benefits for humans due to its capability of scavenging free radicals. Traditionally, the quantification of lycopene requires an elaborate extraction process combined with HPLC analysis within the laboratory. Recent studies focused simpler methods for determining lycopene and utilized spectroscopic measurement methods. The aim of this study was to compare non-destructive methods for the prediction of lycopene by using color values from colorimeter measurements and Vis/NIR spectra recorded with three commercially available and portable Vis/NIR spectrometers, so called food-scanners. Tomatoes of five different ripening stages (green to red) as well as tomatoes stored up to 22 days after harvest were used for modeling. After measurement of color values and collection of Vis/NIR spectra the corresponding lycopene content was analyzed spectrophotometrically. Applying exponential regression models yielded very good prediction of lycopene for color values L*, a*, a*/b* and the tomato color index of 0.94, 0.90, 0.90 and 0.91, respectively. Color value b* was not a suitable predictor for lycopene content, whereas the (a*/b*)² value had the best linear fit of 0.87. In comparison to color measurements, the cross-validated prediction models developed for all three food-scanners had coefficients of determination (r²CV) ranging from 0.92 to 0.96. Food-scanners also can be used for additional measurements of internal fruit quality, and therefore have great potential for fruit quality assessment by measuring a multitude of important fruit traits in one single scan.

Originally advertised as tools for end-consumers, portable food-scanners have recently reached a high level of awareness and show potential as instruments for quality assessment along fruit and vegetable supply c hains. The current study explores preferences and concerns of chain actors regarding the implementation of this technology through semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that food-scanners could facilitate quality control at different levels of the fresh produce supply chain by providing fast, non-destructive and objective measurements. Concerns about the application of food-scanners could be identified with respect to potential additional requirements of fruit wholesaler resulting in more pressure on producers. To further a goal-oriented and user-directed development of this new technology, future research should be directed at its impacts on perception of fruit quality along the chain as well as end-consumers’ readiness to use these devices in everyday life.

This study investigated the sustainability challenges and the adoption of sustainability innovations along the value chain of flowering potted plants supplying the German market. Data was collected through eighteen in-depths interviews with chain actors from different stages of the value chain and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The material flow of the value chain begins at the breeding level followed by the propagation level. Cuttings are produced mostly in African countries, rooted cuttings and potted plants are cultivated in Europe. The main environmental challenges include water scarcity, pesticide use and carbon footprint. Social challenges in Africa include low wages and difficult working conditions. In Germany, social challenges include recruitment and retention of employees and product transparency. Economic challenges include profitability and the need to comply with standards. Sustainability driven innovations can address some sustainability challenges. However, their implementation often leads to increased costs, financial risk and complexity of implementation. Furthermore, the lack of product transparency prevents the transfer of sustainability costs to the consumer by offering a sustainable product for a premium price. Business-to-business standards have generally had a positive influence on the adoption of sustainability innovations. But by setting certification as an entry barrier for suppliers, retailers have become more powerful chain actors.

The effect of a respiratory quotient dynamic controlled atmosphere (DCA – RQ), which induces ethanol production through low oxygen storage, and ethanol application on softening of Braeburn apples stored at different temperatures was investigated. DCA – RQ storage was associated with the activation of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and greater anaerobic metabolism in comparison with DCA – CF (chlorophyll fluorescence) and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage. Greater anaerobic metabolism resulted in lower ethylene production, ACC oxidase activity, membrane permeability, <beta>-galactosidase activity and, therefore, less softening after long-term storage. Ethanol application after CA storage decreased ethylene biosynthesis, respiration rate and membrane permeability. Storage at 3 °C resulted in the lowest soluble solids and acidity, but not softening. In conclusion, Braeburn apples could be stored at 3 °C under DCA – RQ1.5. Additionally, ethanol produced by the fruit, or applied externally, had a significant effect on inhibiting softening during and after storage.

The use of supplemental lighting in horticulture is continuously increasing. Compared to HPS luminaires LED have significant advantages like the possibility of a targeted compilation of the spectrum, the use of dimmable and dynamic adaptable luminaires, the insensitivity to the switching frequency, less heat radiation and the and the high energy efficiency. Experiments with monochromatic lighting show potentials for influencing various quality factors with specialized light spectra in order to reach the targeted plant quality. However, many questions are still open, resulting in a rather low transfer rate of specific lighting strategies in the applied horticulture. Beneficial effects of interlighting were shown in greenhouse experiments and their potentials discussed. In the future higher requirements on plant and fruit quality and a sustainable use of resources will result in a greater importance for specialized lighting strategies and advanced technological solutions.

The aim of the study was to evaluate an elevated (3.0 °C) and low (1.0 °C) storage temperature combined with dynamic controlled atmosphere monitored by respiratory quotient (DCA–RQ) and chlorophyll fluorescence (DCA–CF) on anaerobic metabolism, physiological storage disorders and overall quality of ‘Nicoter’ (‘Kanzi®’) apples after 5.5 and 8.0 months of storage plus 7d shelf-life. Fruit stored under DCA–RQ 2.0 accumulated the highest amounts of anaerobic metabolites (acetaldehyde, ethanol and ethyl acetate), regardless of storage temperature and timing of storage outturn evaluation, but it did not result in higher electrolyte leakage. Flesh breakdown, core breakdown and cavity formation were reduced at 3 °C. Storage at 3 °C combined with DCA maintained higher flesh firmness after 8.0 months storage plus 7d shelf-life. ‘Nicoter’ apples can be stored at 3 °C using a DCA system, based either on CF or on RQ, to save electrical energy.

This proof-of-concept study investigated the effects of an innovative nutrition concept, comprising texture modification, enrichment, and reshaping, on dietary intake and nutritional status of 16 nursing home residents with chewing and/or swallowing problems (mean age 86.5 ± 7.4 years) in a pre-test post-test design. Green roofs might mitigate the urban-heat-islands (UHI) due to an increase of evapotranspiration. However, most green roofs are nowadays extensive ones which are designed as dry site without irrigation, with a thin layer of growing medium and drought-adapted vegetation, especially sedum. Under hot and dry conditions - when cooling is needed - evapotranspiration of such green roofs will decrease rapidly because of a shortage of water. To increase evapotranspiration and thus cooling capacity, supplementary irrigation and plants with high transpiration are needed. But the use of drinking water is not sustainable, due to limited resources. Grey water might be an alternative. In a previous work herbs and grasses tolerant to grey water and with high transpiration rates were selected. In the current study evapotranspiration of extensive roof greenings with three mixtures of these plants compared to common sedum greenings was examined. In a 14-month greenhouse experiment, grey water irrigation reduced evapotranspiration of mixtures of herbs and grasses as well as of sedum only up to 15% compared to tap water. Irrespective of water quality, evapotranspiration of herbs grasses mixtures was more than twice as high as evapotranspiration of sedum. Under field conditions an established herbs grasses roof reached an evapotranspiration of 7.5 L m-2 d-1. Based on the results of the greenhouse and field trials the FAO-56 evapotranspiration model was adapted to non-irrigated green roofs with sedum as well as to irrigated sedum and herbs grasses vegetation, respectively. These models show that under hot and dry conditions evapotranspiration of non-irrigated sedum roofs tend towards zero within a few days, whereas irrigated herbs grasses roofs maintain high evapotranspiration rates. At least under weather conditions in central Europe irrigated roof greenings with herbs and grasses can compensate nearly 100% of global radiation during summer. Thus, this new type of high transpiration green roof can reduce UHI sustainable.

To limit climate change, significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are needed. Changes to consumer behavior could be one strategy to reach emission reduction targets. In this context, the role of information is crucial. One way of informing consumers about the climate impact of their food choices is through labels on the packaging. Providing additional information about labels or climate friendly food behavior directly before the product choice is made can stimulate the use of and preferences for carbon labels. The main aim of this study was to analyze the effect of information provision on supermarket consumers in Germany and their use of and preferences for carbon labels. It was also studied which types of carbon labels consumers prefer and how important these labels are as a criterion for the product choice. Data from a focus group workshop and two in-store surveys, including a pair wise comparison experiment and two Discrete-Choice Experiments, were used. The results show that providing additional information about labels can enhance the use of these labels and increase consumers' focus on the labels when making their product choice. It can also influence the general decision to buy or not buy a product and the preferences for the existence of a label. Consumers prefer carbon labels which use a scale and a traffic light color system. However, carbon labels are generally not important in consumers' decision-making process.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mash enzymatic maceration and heating treatments before pressing on the antioxidant activities in selected berry juices. Total phenolic contents were determined by the Folin–Ciocalteau assay, antioxidant activities were determined by means of the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay, and the intracellular antioxidant potentials were determined through the cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) assay. Blueberry juices exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, followed by black currant and raspberry juices. The mash enzyme treatment with Pectinex® Ultra Color enzyme preparation, improved the antioxidant activities in vitro. ORAC values correlated with CAA values (R2 = 0.91) and a slightly positive correlation was observed between Folin–Ciocalteau and CAA assays (R2 = 0.56). The findings support the observation that the mash enzymatic treatment of macerated fruits enhances their antioxidant activity. Considering the chemical assays (ORAC and total phenolic content), a combined treatment with heating to 85°C followed by mash enzymatic treatment was the most effective. Considering a biological model through the CAA assay, however, a comparable improvement in antioxidant activity resulted from the enzymatic and the combined treatments. Overall, the data showed that maceration enzymatic treatment improves the intracellular antioxidant activity in HepG2 human cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the effect of the antioxidant potential of mash enzymatic and heating treatments assessed by means of a cellular approach.

Dry as well as wet coating techniques were developed to coat glass beads as filter media to remove manganese from water. For dry coating, powdered manganese oxide ore was fixed on the media surface. Wet coating was achieved by depositing synthetic manganese oxides onto the bead surface. The media were characterized by electron microscopy as well as by testing the removal of Mn2+ in a continuous stirred tank reactor. Image analysis of microscopic pictures illustrated that the surface area could partly be coated by powdered material using dry coating methods, whereas complete coverage was achieved using wet coating approaches. With regard to dry coating techniques, Mn sorption uptake was higher for the adhesively dry coated glass beads than for beads where a binding agent was used. The wet coating column approach proved to be more successful than the coating of beads in a stirred tank reactor. Mn removal capability of the beads increased with higher reactant concentrations during coating. Oxide-coated glass beads applied in filter systems have the potential to improve conventional demanganization processes.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) and caffeic acid (CA) are potent antixodiants and show antimicrobial activity against many fungal plant pathogens. Their biosynthesis employs enzymes of the phenylpropanoid pathway, a pathway that in mustard is regulated by phytochrome. If RA biosynthesis is regulated by phytochromes one would expect that the RA level correlated with the ratio of red to far-red light. In this paper we tested this hypothesis by growing basil and borage under different ratios of red to far-red light. CA and RA contents were measured with state of the art LC-MS/MS. Regression analysis showed that there is a significant inverse correlation of the ratio of red to far-red light and the content of RA, but not of CA. Hence, we conclude that RA biosynthesis is regulated by phytochrome.

The intensity, and consequently the energy consumption, of light emitting diodes (LEDs) can be regulated. Therefore, LEDs can be implemented in new, dynamic energy saving strategies. Recently it has been shown that a program, which adjusts the intensity of a LED to the current solar PAR, reduced its energy consumption by 20%. The effect of a dynamic LED lighting on ornamental crops has not been tested. In this study we compared the growth of the model plant Helianthus annuus under a dynamic versus a static, control LED lighting. The data of this study show that the dynamic LED consumed 21% less energy than a control LED. However, there was no difference in crop quality or time to anthesis.

The development of primordial roots of Euphorbia pulcherrima cuttings coincides with a significant increase in photosynthesis. Therefore, Svenson and Davies (1990) suggested that supplementary lighting has no effect on root development of Euphorbia pulcherrima cuttings before primordial roots develop. In this study this hypothesis was experimentally challenged. Cuttings were cultivated with supplementary lighting from the day of sticking and compared to cuttings that were exposed to the same lighting after primordial root development. Our data show that both sets of cuttings developed equally well and both did better than cuttings that were cultivated without supplementary light. Moreover, the data show that light quality had a major impact on root number, length and weight. Therefore, this study confirms the hypothesis of Svenson and Davies (1990) and shows that the positive effect of supplementary lighting is partially mediated by photoreceptors.

Light quality affects plant morphology. Hence, light quality is an important factor in the cultivation of ornamental plants. The recent advances in LED technology allow producers to adjust light quality to manipulate plant growth. For growers of ornamental plants the primary aim regarding plant morphology is to keep plants short and compact with attractive flowers. However, data on the effect of light quality on plant morphology are still sparse. This study provides data on the effect of different LED light regimes on height and fresh weight of shoot and flower, leaf area and compactness of the model plant Helianthus annuus. Regression analysis of these data shows that red light promotes compact growth.

Researchers from several disciplines are interested in understanding the spontaneous and eruptive overfoaming (gushing) of carbonated beverages, as it is an essential problem of both brewing and beverage industries. In order to understand the mechanism(s) taking place in gushing-beer, several beer ingredients have been investigated as model substances in much simpler matrix of carbonated water. For this purpose, sinapic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, cinnamic acid and palmitic acid have been chosen as model beer ingredients. Gushing formation of the investigated beer ingredients depends on degree of stabilized solvated molecular carbon dioxide in water. For this purpose, functional groups which are capable of forming hydrogen bonds with electronegative oxygen atoms of carbon dioxide are needed. However, solubility of substances plays an important role in abundance of these functional groups in undissociated form to interact further with solvated molecular carbon dioxide. The reported data provide valuable insights into the gushing problem and help to understand its formation pathways. Each gushing-positive substance has an individual mechanism related to its structural conformation and solubility level. Therefore, possible gushing mechanisms have been proposed with respect to structural changes in model substances to clarify the differences in observed overfoaming and gushing stability levels.

Ziel der Kooperation der drei Hochschulen war es, die Lehre an allen beteiligten Standorten durch die Bündelung von Kompetenzen zu verbessern. Studierende und Dozenten zogen nach Abschluss des Kurses ein überwiegend positives Fazit.

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) comprises controlled reduction of irrigation during certain phases of plant development, accepting minor yield reduction but maximising net returns. To optimise RDI, plant response-based irrigation scheduling may be essential. For this, the knowledge of plant reactions to soil water regimes is indispensable. In field trials (randomized block design, 3 repetitions), ‘Nanthya’ carrots (F1-hybrid) were grown at 20, 40, 60 and 80% field capacity (determined by TDR sensors), yielding soil water contents of 5.1±0.2, 6.2±0.8, 10.1±0.5 and 11.2±0.2% (controls). To guarantee constant controlled soil water contents, plastic rain shelter (76% transparency) were applied. Plots were irrigated if necessary. Treatments started 23 d after sowing (DAS), first sampling was 91 DAS, while final harvest was 106 DAS. On each date, fresh and dry mass, water content, water potential, osmotic potential, turgor and stiffness of carrot tubers were analyzed. Root fresh mass (n=20 carrots per treatment) was higher at high water availability only at the 1st sampling but not at the final harvest. Here, water regime did not affect yield. At this time, root tuber water potential was lower than at the 1st sampling and it was also lower at low soil water availability (20%, 40%). Similar results were obtained for the mean osmotic potential. These variations partially resulted from osmotic adjustment (at 1st harvest) and from a lower root tuber water content at the final sampling. The generally higher modulus of elasticity at this date indicated water volume-independent cell wall-stiffening, i.e. elastic adjustment. The presented results point out that moderately reduced (by 20%) irrigation of carrots does not affect their yield, while pronounced water shortage may induce physiological adjustment.

Several lighting strategies in an indoor farm are compared regarding the annual electrical energy consumption. Based on measurements of the energy consumption during one experiment, conducted inside the indoor farm at the HSWT, an energy balancing model was calibrated and subsequently validated by a second experiment. The model was then used to calculate the potential reduction of the annual electrical energy consumption concerning several different lighting strategies. Furthermore, different settings of temperature set points and the impact of an optimized heat transfer coefficient as well as a more efficient performance for heating and cooling are considered. The measured and the modeled energy consumption and the values regained by the model showed a high regression coefficient (R2=0.936). The prediction of the energy consumption during the second experiment was also possible (R2=0.738) with a total difference to the measured consumption of 29.1 kWh. Regarding the given technical settings of the indoor farm, the annual electrical energy consumption can be reduced by up to 16% by an adjustment of the temperature strategy while reaching a similar yield. By assuming an optimized technical setting, the relevance of the lighting strategy increased significantly. Based upon this an annual reduction of the electrical energy consumption of up to 21% seemed conceivable.

Originally advertised as tools for end-consumers, food-scanners have recently gained publicity and show potential as instruments for quality assessment along the fruit and vegetable supply chain. The current study explores preferences and concerns of chain actors regarding the implementation of this technology through semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that food-scanners could facilitate quality control at different levels of the fresh produce supply chain by providing fast, non-destructive and objective measurements. Concerns about the application of food-scanners could be identified with respect to potential additional requirements of trading companies resulting in more pressure on producers. The use of food-scanners by end-consumers is discussed critically. To further a goal-oriented and user-directed development of this new technology, future research should be directed at its impacts on perception of fruit quality along the chain as well as end-consumers’ readiness to use these devices in everyday life.

Obwohl die Landwirtschaft schon immer technologische Neuerungen in der Produktion einsetzt, ist gerade die landwirtschaftliche Beratung bisher noch verhältnismäßig wenig digitalisiert. Oft ist es gängige Praxis für Landwirte und Berater, gesetzliche Regelungen, Fachliteratur und Betriebsdaten in Papierform nachzuschlagen und in unstrukturierten, digitalen Dokumenten einzutragen. Zur Unterstützung der Landwirte und der Pflanzenbauberatung wird ein Entscheidungshilfesystem entwickelt, welches die Beratung in der Landwirtschaft digital unterstützen und erleichtern soll, indem es aktuelles Fach- und Expertenwissen sowie individuelle Betriebsdaten abruft, aufbereitet und zweckgebunden auswertet. Dafür ist es notwendig, das entsprechende Fachwissen aus vielfältigen heterogenen Datenquellen in einer einheitlichen Wissensbasis verfügbar zu machen. Der hier beschriebene Ansatz verwendet Semantic-Web-Technologien wie OWL-Ontologien und SPARQL-Abfragen, um diese Daten hinsichtlich ihrer Bedeutung, d. h. semantisch, zu modellieren und abzufragen.
